New Charter Academy

On the 1st September 2008,  Hartshead Sports College and Stamford High School combined to form the New Charter Academy

The Academy opens by using the two existing school buildings. New buildings for the Academy are now being constructed on land to the north of Broadoak Community Centre in Ashton-under-Lyne. The New Charter Academy will co-locate with a new Samuel Laycock Special School.

The sponsor is the New Charter Housing Trust Group. It announced its sponsorship of the 11-19 1650-place Academy (to eventually include a sixth form of 300) in November 2005. It believes Ashton-under-Lyne should have an outstanding school which increases opportunities and achievement levels for all young people.

New Charter is putting £2million into the new school which has been the catalyst for a £300m Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme across Tameside in Greater Manchester.

The Academy specialises in Business and Enterprise with Sport a second specialism.
